For education and visit preparation; individual assessment requires a clinical history and examination.
More than a single tract
Perianal symptoms in Crohn’s disease can involve inflammation, ulceration, narrowing, an abscess or a fistula. Planning therefore goes beyond closing a skin opening and includes understanding disease activity.
Sequence the treatment
An abscess needs attention to drainage and infection control. Complex fistulas require coordination between colorectal surgery and the IBD team. A loose seton may support drainage before medical treatment or a later repair; its presence does not establish definitive healing.
Prepare a shared record
Bring medicines, endoscopy, MRI and operation reports, plus a timeline of bowel symptoms, drainage and continence. Ask how rectal inflammation is assessed and what needs to improve before considering fistula closure.
Questions for your appointment
- Could an abscess explain the pain?
- Who coordinates bowel treatment and surgery?
- What is the purpose and review plan for a seton?
