For education and visit preparation; individual assessment requires a clinical history and examination.
Different tissue is involved
Haemorrhoids are vascular cushions near the anal outlet that can enlarge and prolapse. Rectal prolapse involves the rectal wall itself. Bleeding and protrusion overlap, so symptoms alone do not establish which is present.
Describe the prolapse
Explain whether it appears during bowel movements, returns by itself or needs help. Mention mucus, leakage and difficulty emptying. These details guide examination.
The distinction changes treatment
Haemorrhoid procedures address haemorrhoidal tissue. Rectal prolapse requires assessment of the prolapse, evacuation and continence to plan treatment. Treating haemorrhoids does not correct prolapse of the rectal wall.
When to seek urgent assessment
Tissue trapped outside with severe pain or a change in colour needs urgent assessment. An earlier label of haemorrhoids should not delay review of a new or worsening problem.
Questions for your appointment
- Which tissue is actually prolapsing?
- Is evacuation or continence also affected?
- How will the proposed treatment address the cause?
